Getting there and what's nearby
Grand Oaks is ten minutes from Main Street Fredericksburg, in the Texas Hill Country. Most guests drive in from Austin, San Antonio, Houston, or Dallas. The rest fly into San Antonio or Austin and rent a car. Here's the honest version of the trip and what you'll actually do when you get here.
Driving from Austin
Roughly 1.5 hours, 80 miles. Take US-290 West the whole way. It's a straightforward drive. You'll pass through Dripping Springs, Johnson City, and Stonewall before you hit Fredericksburg. The stretch between Johnson City and Fredericksburg is the wine trail, so if you're arriving early, that's where you'd stop.
Driving from San Antonio
Roughly 1 hour, 70 miles. Take I-10 West to US-87 North at Comfort. Fastest route in the whole Texas Triangle. San Antonio guests routinely leave home after breakfast and are on our front porch by lunch.
Driving from Houston
Roughly 3.5 hours, 240 miles. I-10 West the whole way, exit at Kerrville, then north on TX-16. Not a short drive but a familiar one. Most Houston guests we host make it a three-day weekend.
Driving from Dallas–Fort Worth
Roughly 4 hours, 260 miles. I-35 South to US-290 West at Austin. This is the longest of the four Triangle routes. Guests coming from Dallas typically make it a longer stay - three or four nights minimum.
Flying in
The two options are both fine. It just depends on the flight options on your dates.
-
San Antonio International (SAT) - 75 miles, roughly an hour, 15 minutes to the ranch.
-
Austin-Bergstrom International (AUS) - 90 miles, roughly 1.5 hours. Bigger airport, often better fares, especially from the coasts.
You can rent a car to and from the airports, and we can recommend a local Fredericksburg rideshare to take you around town, especially to and from the wineries.
What's within ten minutes
-
Main Street Fredericksburg: Restaurants, shops, tasting rooms, the German bakery.
-
Grocery: H-E-B on the east side of town. Stock the silo kitchen, from here or Natural Grocers on your way in.
-
Hospital: Hill Country Memorial.
-
Gas: Multiple stations on Route 16 or 290.
What's within thirty minutes
-
The wine trail: More than 50 wineries between Fredericksburg and Johnson City on US-290. Becker Vineyards, William Chris, Grape Creek, Kuhlman Cellars. That's a starting list, not a full one. Weekends get busy; midweek is easier.
-
Wild Seed Farms: Largest working wildflower farm in the country. Best in spring but open year-round.
-
Luckenbach: Yes, that Luckenbach. Small, dusty, exactly what you'd expect. Live music most afternoons.
-
Enchanted Rock State Natural Area: Giant pink granite dome. Hike to the top for the view. Book a day pass in advance, it sells out.

Enchanted Rock
What's within an hour
-
Boerne: Smaller Hill Country town, quieter than Fredericksburg. Good day trip for antiquing.
-
The Guadalupe River: Tubing, swimming, kayaking. Cool water on hot days.
-
San Antonio Riverwalk: If you have kids and need a full-day change of scenery.
Sunday brunch and Monday breakfast
The question every guest asks on arrival. On Main Street: Vaudeville does brunch well, Otto's is the German option, Sunset Grill gets you off the beaten path, and the German Bakery on Adams handles pastries and coffee. Reserve for weekend brunch. Fredericksburg fills up.
Cell service and Wi-Fi
Cell service on the property is decent but not perfect. Verizon and AT&T both work; T-Mobile is spottier. Every silo and the farmhouse have Starlink Wi-Fi, and it's reliable enough for streaming and video calls. If you're planning to work remotely from here, you'll be fine. If you need bulletproof connectivity for a live client presentation, use the farmhouse.
What to bring that you might not think of
-
Sunscreen: The Hill Country sun is stronger than it looks, even in fall.
-
Layers: Mornings and evenings on the porch get cool most of the year — even in summer.
-
A swimsuit: The pool is a main reason people come back.
-
Comfortable shoes: Twenty-two acres is a lot of ground.
